I am a Professor at the Institute of Structural Mechanics, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic. I joined the Institute in 2004 upon obtaining my PhD degree. In 2007, I was appointed as an Associate Professor following my habilitation, and in 2013, I was promoted to Full Professor.

Education
I obtained my engineering degree, with a focus on "Structures and Traffic Constructions" and a specialization in Structures, during my MSc studies (1995-2000) at the Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering. My doctoral dissertation ("summa cum laude") was completed between 2000 and 2004, culminating in a Ph.D. from the Institute of Structural Mechanics at the same university. During this period, I engaged in several extended research stays at RWTH Aachen University in Germany, collaborating with Dr. Rostislav Chudoba on the statistical strength of cementitious fibrous composites. My studies received partial supervision from Prof. Zdeněk P. Bažant at Northwestern University, Evanston, USA, where I also spent a research stint (2003-2004) under the Fulbright Program.
Teaching
My teaching portfolio at the Institute of Structural Mechanics spans a wide range of courses, from the fundamental mechanics of structures and strength of materials to specialized classes I personally guarantee in advanced theoretical and computational mechanics. These advanced courses delve into complex subjects such as nonlinear mechanics, with a focus on plasticity, damage, and fracture mechanics, in addition to exploring energetical principles and structural reliability.
Research Interests
My research primarily resides at the intersection of mechanics of solids, probability theory, and computer science. This multidisciplinary approach enables me to explore and contribute to a wide range of scientific inquiries, particularly in the realms of uncertainty quantification and stochastic methods. These methodologies are applied across computational mechanics and computational materials science, where my focus spans a diverse array of structures and materials.

I specialize in methodological research in uncertainty quantification and stochastic methods with applications that extend into computational mechanics and computational materials science. The core of my work is centered around heterogeneous and quasi-brittle infrastructure materials. My analysis often involves studying redistribution processes under load in cementitious composites such as concrete, textile concrete, and other fibrous composites, including the fibrous reinforcements themselves. These materials are invariably examined in light of the spatial variability of their properties, utilizing random fields and discrete models, and I delve into the size effect on strength from both energetic and statistical perspectives. Supported by several agencies, my current research projects are focused on modeling the fatigue of concrete and the remodeling processes of bones.

A significant portion of my research is devoted to computational methods of structural reliability and uncertainty quantification. I emphasize the development of interpretable probabilistic analysis methods that leverage domain- or problem-specific knowledge. This includes not only variance reduction techniques but also the creation of techniques for generating optimal designs of computer experiments. These designs consider low discrepancy, space-filling properties, and statistical correlation, developed for initial model screening, one-shot designs, and adaptive designs using active learning to balance exploration with the exploitation of current information. In this context, I employ advanced surrogate models, such as polynomial chaos expansions, focusing on the probabilistic estimation of failure probability and its sensitivity to input variables. My work addresses both highly complex functions of input random variables and challenges associated with large input dimensions.

Moreover, I am actively involved in the development of software that implements these advanced techniques, applying them in my applied research in collaboration with companies. This blend of theoretical innovation and practical application underscores my commitment to advancing the field and contributing to its application in solving real-world problems.

In addition to the aforementioned areas, my research interests extend into a novel interdisciplinary domain that bridges the gap between engineering, biology, and medicine. This collaborative effort focuses on cell patterning and growth, epithelial morphogenesis, and chemo-mechanical modeling, with the aim of advancing research in cancer and fibrosis.

My award-winning contributions to applied research with industry are listed in section Applied research & Consulting.

abstract = {A thermodynamically consistent model proposed in this work introduces a generative symbolic framework for computational components, which can capture the inelastic behavior of interfaces with 3D kinematics in response to monotonic, cyclic, and fatigue loading histories. It contributes to a long list of existing cohesive zone models by introducing novel forms of potentials for free energy, threshold function, and dissipation to deliver the following model properties: (i) the evolution equations derived from the potentials are linked in such a way that damage develops along with the cumulative measure of plastic sliding, (ii) the convex, continuous, and smooth shape of the threshold function introduced in the effective stress domain enables a general and efficient time integration that automatically handles unloading and reloading, and (iii) the non-associative flow potential includes a scalable degree of coupling between normal and tangential damage evolution. The studies performed in the paper demonstrate that these model ingredients lead to a consistent coverage of arbitrary non-proportional loading scenarios in tangential and normal directions. For monotonic loading, the presented examples illustrate the ability of the model to reproduce the shear dilatancy, pressure sensitivity including the vertex effect, stiffness recovery in compression, and abrasion due to sliding. For cyclic fatigue loading, the studies show that the model reflects the link between the hysteretic behavior and the fatigue damage evolution. This link constitutes the basis for a physically sound description of fatigue degradation along material interfaces. It manifests itself in the presented energy breakdown with distinguished fractions of energy release due to damage and plasticity ascribed to normal and tangential directions. Two calibration and validation examples using pull-out tests exposed to monotonic and cyclic loading are provided to show the applicability of the model for the characterization of the bond between steel bars and concrete. A publicly available implementation using a computer algebra system (CAS) is provided in the form of an interactive Jupyter notebook to document the reproducibility of the results.}

  Prospective students

This section is dedicated to students interested in pursuing study topics that I offer under my individual supervision or via a more flexible collaboration. Below, you will find a list of my former students, detailing their names, the years of their study, thesis titles, and links to their theses—all presented in Czech.

I offer consulting services by providing quantitative computational and software solutions to challenges where it's critical to accurately estimate and/or minimize uncertainty. This enables my clients to assess their confidence levels and make informed decisions to effectively mitigate risk. Specializing in uncertainty quantification (UQ), machine learning (ML), and probabilistic computational modeling, my services deliver innovative and practical solutions to understand the influence of uncertainty on engineering systems, as well as on both physics-based and data-driven models. In partnership with my clients, I develop customized software solutions tailored to a wide array of problems.

Some of th e specific services I provide include Risk and Reliability Analysis, Global Sensitivity Analysis, Efficient ML-based Surrogate Modeling, and Probabilistic Modeling and Uncertainty Estimation. Each service is designed to equip my clients with the necessary tools and insights to navigate the complexities of uncertainty in their projects.

I offer experience in the fields of computational mechanics, optimization, and the development of engineering software for practical applications, as well as for tasks that straddle the line between research and practice.

I have established and maintain a laboratory equipped with the electromechanical testing machine Zwick/Roell Z100, along with a non-contact optical measurement system for deformation mapping using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) ARAMIS by GOM. This dual-camera system allows for precise tracking of the displacement field on the surface of test specimens in 3D. Consequently, I offer specialized mechanical testing services, which can be complemented by advanced modeling, such as nonlinear finite element method (FEM) analysis. These services are suitable for a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics, and cement-based composites.
