Lectures
- Water cycle in nature, water management (water path), water footprint.
- Governance, economics, policy and planning in water management.
- Hydrology, rainfall-runoff process in a catchment, hydrometry.
- Environment, climate change, drought and extreme precipitation.
- watershed management, water retention in the landscape, irrigation, drainage, conservation and organization of watersheds.
- Water courses, their natural development and treatment, damming estuaries.
- Fixed and movable weirs, waterways and navigation, objects crossing watercourses.
- Dams and the use of hydroelectric power, flood protection.
- Small reservoirs, ponds, water features, revitalization and renovation of watercourses.
- Water supply - abstraction, demand, treatment, water transport, balneology and spa, protection of water resources.
- Sewerage - sewerage networks and wastewater treatment.
- Urban drainage systems, blue-green infrastructure, rainwater management, water harvesting.
- Selected statutes on water management.
Exercise:
- Excursion to the laboratory environment with a focus on Water Structures (VST).
- Field trip to the laboratory environment with a focus on Water Landscape Management (VHK).
- Field trip to the laboratory environment with a focus on Municipal Water Management (VHO).
- Example from the VST area - compressive force on the bottom and wall of a concrete tank, assessment of stability of an underground tank against scour.
- Example from the field of VST - steady flow with free surface (ditch, water channel).
- Example from the field of VHK - evaluation of the absorption capacity of the subsoil, determination of the volume of rainwater runoff from paved areas and areas with grass cover, comparison with each other.
- VHK example - continuation of the previous example, design of seepage facilities in the design of land and transport structures.
- Example from the field of VHO - water flow in pipes, context and practice - water abstraction during a building fire, influence of pressures in the water network, pump design.
- Example from the field of VHO - calculation of pipe capacity flow, choice of pipe dimension in the design of e.g. sewer networks.
- Group discussion of a VST topic - short presentations by groups of students, guided discussion (scored) with other students on a selected VST topic.
- The group solved topic in the field of VHK - short presentations by groups of students, guided discussion (scored) with other students on a selected topic in the field of VHK.
- Group solution of a topic in the field of VHO - short presentations by groups of students, guided discussion (scored) with other students on a selected topic in the field of VHO.
- Review of the output of the exercise, conclusion of the worked examples and measurement protocols. Submission and award of credit.
Learning outcomes
- Professional knowledge
The student will acquire basic professional knowledge in the field of water management and water structures, which he/she will remember, understand and be able to analyze. In the exercises, the student will practice a total of 6 basic computational examples that may be commonly encountered in construction practice.
- Professional Skills
After completing the course, the student will be able to apply, evaluate and use the knowledge gained for practical applications in the construction industry. During the exercises, the student will strengthen the ability to argue, dialogue with the opposing party, discuss and present his/her own results.
- Professional competences
The student will acquire competence to study related subjects in the field of water management, if studying another discipline, he/she will be able to design and assess simple situations and projects.
