Aims
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the contemporary professional English terminology in the fields of sustainable and smart building, facility management and BIM. Students will be introduced to implementation of foreign terminology and methods in Czech conditions.
Students will be able to apply their knowledge in short professional texts in English.
Prerequisites
B2 level in English according to CEFR.
Basic knowledge of professional Czech terminology in the fields of sustainable and smart building, facility management and BIM.

13 weeks, 2 hours/week, compulsory
Syllabus
- 1. Recapitulation of previous knowledge: English terminology related to the design of (residential) buildings with nearly zero energy consumption. Introduction of course requirements and deliverables.
- 2. Building reconstructions, renovations and rehabilitation, building surveys and their recording. Introduction to fundamental terminology describing the state of existing buildings (surveys, measurements, laboratory tests). Types of building surveys (structural, moisture, biocorrosion, etc.). Differences in contemporary ČSN and EN/ISO standards.
- 3. BIM. Fundamental terminology in Building Integrated Modelling. Introduction to complex (computer) modelling of building life cycle.
- 4. Multi-criteria assessment of buildings. Buildings in the context of sustainable development. Reasons and options for multi-criteria assessment of buildings. Fundamental English terminology in the field. Assignment: Developing abstract of diploma project and presentation of the specialized part of the project.
- 5. Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA): A method for evaluation of environmental impacts. Fundamental English terminology in the field.
- 6. Facility management. Definitions, descriptions, terminology development and contemporary English terminology.
- 7. Consultations and discussion of abstracts and presentations. Recapitulation of principals of spoken presentations.
- 8. - 9. Presentations of students' diploma projects (specialized part) and discussion.
- 10. Classification and credits. Final submission of abstracts and presentations.
