The Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT has a new management
On February 1, 2022, a new dean, prof. Ing. Rostislav Drochytka, CSc., MBA, dr.h.c., took over the management of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Brno University of Technology.
After taking office, the Dean of FCE BUT submitted to the Academic Senate of FCE BUT a request to discuss the proposal for the appointment of Vice-Deans for the period 2022 - 2026, including the area of their expected activities. On March 16, 2022, the Academic Senate of FCE BUT discussed the proposed candidates for the position of Vice-Deans. With this step, the process of appointing a new faculty management was formally completed.
The team of Vice-Deans consists of:
- Vice-Dean for Doctoral Studies and Internal Relations prof. Ing. Miroslav Bajer, CSc.
- Vice-Dean for Bachelor's and Master's Studies and Teaching in English Assoc. prof. Ing. Jan Jandora, Ph.D.
- Vice-Dean for Creative Activities and Digitization Assoc. prof. Mgr. Tomas Apeltauer, Ph.D.
- Vice-Dean for Faculty Development Assoc. prof. Ing. Karel Šuhajda, Ph.D.
- Vice-Dean for External Relations, Internationalization and Marketing Assoc. prof. JUDr. Ing. Zdeněk Dufek, Ph.D.
The vision of the Dean of FAST BUT on the functioning of the faculty in the coming years is based on the following partial goals and priorities:
- Educational and teaching activities with emphasis on internationalization.
- Creative activity in science and research.
- Quality management system of the faculty - digitization of activities and information support.
- Faculty development - investments in staff and students, including modernization of the faculty.
- Transfer of the results and knowledge into practice in the Czech Republic or abroad, marketing.
Brief personal profiles of faculty management are as follows:
Dean prof. Ing. Rostislav Drochytka, CSc., MBA, dr.h.c.
After high school focused on chemistry, he graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Brno University of Technology, the field of Building Materials (1982) and then defended his scientific work at the same faculty in the field of Non-metallic Materials and Building Materials (1986). He received his habilitation in the field of Physical and Building Materials Engineering in 1992, and was subsequently appointed professor in 2001. He has been closely connected with the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT all his life, he has worked here in the management of the faculty for 7 years as a Vice-Dean and 8 years as a Dean. He is currently the head of the Institute of Technology of Building Materials and Components. His expertise is advanced building materials, especially aerated concrete, polymers in construction, degradation and durability of building materials, defects and failures, concrete remediation, surface treatment of buildings, solidification of hazardous waste and the use of secondary raw materials in building materials and their incorporation into building microstructures. He is appointed forensic expert.
In his areas of expertise, he has implemented more than 52 projects and grants funded by various bodies such as the Czech Science Foundation (GAČR), the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TAČR), the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic (MPO) and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MŠMT). He has additionally held the role of Principal Investigator in four successful international EU projects, and it is also necessary to mention his close cooperation via contract research with major domestic and international firms concerned with the manufacture of high-performance building materials. In his capacity as an educator, he has acted as supervisor to dozens of Bachelor’s and Master’s students as well as more than thirty successful PhD candidates. He has authored a wide range of monographs published both at home and abroad, alongside contributions to specialised journals (including high-impact publications) and conferences. He is also the author of a patent, many utility models and various other applied research outputs. Prof. Drochytka is an active member of the International Union of Testing and Research Laboratories for Materials and Structures (RILEM), along with WTA International, where he represents the Czech Republic. Within the Czech Republic, he is the President of WTA CZ. He has also applied his experience to several projects during long-term research engagements at TU Wien in Austria and at Structural Preservation Systems, Inc. in Baltimore, USA.
He has long been a member of the scientific boards of various institutions including BUT, faculties of architecture and civil engineering, and now also the Scientific Board of the Czech Technical University in Prague. Since 2003, he has worked for the advisory bodies of the Czech Science Foundation in the position of Evaluation Panel member, Panel chairman and Deputy Chairman of Discipline Committee Technical Sciences. In 2015 he was appointed a member of the Supervisory Board of the Czech Science Foundation by the Parliament of the Czech Republic.
In May 2018, the Government of the Czech Republic appointed Prof. Drochytka to the Presidium of the Czech Science Foundation.
Vice-Dean for Doctoral Studies and Internal Relations
prof. Ing. Miroslav Bajer, CSc.
Professor Bajer was born in 1957, he graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT, the field of Construction and Traffic Engineering, the field of Structural Mechanics. He specializes in steel structures and structures combined from steel and concrete with a focus on modelling building structures and structural details. He has been working at the Department of Metal and Wooden Structures since 1985. In the past, he worked as the Vice-Dean of the Faculty and for the last four years he was the Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT. He has been and is a member of several scientific councils. He is an authorized engineer in the fields of Bridges and Civil Engineering and Statics and Dynamics of Buildings. He is the winner of the award (1st place) in the professional public competition GRAND PRIX of the Community of Architects in the category of reconstruction: Reconstruction of the castle greenhouse in Lednice.
Vice-Dean for Bachelor's and Master's Studies and Teaching in English
Assoc. prof. Ing. Jan Jandora, Ph.D
Associate Professor Jandora was born in 1970, he graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT, the field of Water Management and Water Structures. He has been working at the faculty as an employee since 1997 and since 2010 he has been the Vice-Dean for studies. At the faculty, he coordinated the preparation of accreditation in the field of Civil Engineering and coordinated activities related to the preparation of accreditation for bachelor's, master's and doctoral study programmes. He works in the BUT Internal Evaluation Council, where he represents the faculty.
Vice-Dean for Creative Activities and Digitization
Assoc. prof. Mgr. Tomáš Apeltauer, Ph.D.
Associate Professor Apeltauer was born in 1980 and graduated in Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University and Physical and Building Materials Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Brno University of Technology. He has been working at the faculty since 2006, dealing with the issue of agent models and virtual reality, especially in the field of building security, organization of mass events and planning of counter-terrorism measures. He works, among other things, as a member of the Research Council of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic or the Permanent Advisory Board of the Ministry of the Interior for the protection of soft targets.
Vice-Dean for Faculty Development
Assoc. prof. Ing. Karel Šuhajda, Ph.D.
Associate Professor Šuhajda was born in 1979, he graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT, majoring in Civil Engineering. He has been working at the faculty as an employee since 2006 and since the same year he has been the deputy head of the Institute of Building Construction. He has personal experience in scientific research and is the solver of several research projects. He also has experience with the implementation of economic activities at the faculty, expert activities, but also in the field of filing applications and obtaining utility models of patents. He is a professionally recognized expert in the field of Building Construction. He is a member of the ČKAIT (Czech Chamber of Authorized Engineers and Technicians) Regional Committee for the Brno Region and is a member of the Supervisory Board of WTA.cz.
Vice-Dean for External Relations, Internationalization and Marketing
Assoc. prof. JUDr. Ing. Zdeněk Dufek, Ph.D.
Associate Professor Dufek was born in 1978. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Masaryk University and the Faculty of Business and Economics at Mendel University. He completed his doctoral study programme at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Brno University of Technology. He is a forensic expert in the field of economics. He has been working at the Faculty of Civil Engineering since 2014, when he was appointed director of the AdMaS research centre. In the pedagogical field, he deals with the subjects of Economics of Cities and Municipalities and Construction Contract Management. He also works as a project reporter for the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and a member of the Control Board of the Czech Science Foundation.
