FAQ Frequently Asked Questions about Full Degree Programmes in English
Answers to the questions applicants ask us most often. If yours is not here, write to contactus.fce@vutbr.cz.
Applying: When can I apply, and when do studies start?
Applications for the academic year 2027/28 are open from 1 September 2026 to 31 May 2027 through the BUT e-application. Studies start in September. There is one intake per year; we do not offer a February (spring) intake.
Applying: Can I apply before I receive my school-leaving certificate or diploma?
Yes. Submit your application now and upload the certificate as soon as you receive it. The deadline for uploading documents is 31 May 2027. Remember that the document must be translated into English or Czech and legalised before you upload it, and that the visa procedure takes months, so act quickly to be ready for enrolment in September.
Applying: Do I have to send paper documents by post or courier?
No. Upload scanned copies of your verified and translated documents to the e-application, merged into one PDF document; that is sufficient for the admission procedure. You will bring the paper originals to enrolment in September, where they stay on file with the Faculty. Please do not courier documents to us.
Applying: Is there an age limit?
No. Studies are not restricted by age.
Applying: I have already studied at another university. Can I transfer into the second or third year?
No. Every applicant applies to the first year and goes through the standard admission procedure. After you enrol, you can ask for recognition of courses you have already completed. You will need an official transcript and detailed course syllabi (content, hours, credits); recognition is decided individually by our academic staff and is not guaranteed.
Applying: I got my visa too late. Can I postpone to the next academic year?
You can start the following academic year. Because the tuition fee is paid only after admission (the first 50 % before enrolment), you have not paid anything in advance. Once applications open again, submit a new application and pay the application fee; the recognition of prior education does not have to be repeated and we can admit you straight away. Application fees are not transferred between years.
English language: Which English certificates do you accept, and what is the minimum score?
The full list of accepted certificates and minimum scores is published as Annex 1 on the How to Apply page.
English language: My previous studies were taught in English. Do I still need a certificate?
Only if you completed your studies entirely in Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, the United States or the United Kingdom can you skip the certificate. For any other country, a B2 certificate from the accepted list is required even if your programme was taught in English. A letter from your university is not sufficient.
English language: Does the university run its own English test?
No. We do not offer an internal English exam; you must provide an external certificate from the accepted list.
English language: Do you offer a preparatory language course?
No. The Faculty does not run any preparatory language courses, in English or in Czech. You need to meet the B2 English requirement with a certificate before you apply.
Documents and recognition of prior education: Do I legalise my documents before or after uploading them?
Before. Upload your diploma and transcript with all stamps already completed (apostille or superlegalisation depending on your country, as described in Annex 2), together with an official translation into English or Czech. Documents uploaded without legalisation cannot be assessed.
Documents and recognition of prior education: What is the “recognition of prior education” and do I have to arrange it myself?
It is the mandatory assessment confirming that your previous education qualifies you for the programme. You do not arrange it externally. The Faculty carries it out as part of the admission procedure once you have (1) uploaded your fully legalised documents and (2) paid the recognition fee (CZK 750 / EUR 32). The payment details appear in your e-application under “Recognition of prior education” after the application fee has been paid.
Documents and recognition of prior education: I have paid the application fee. Do I have to pay again?
The application fee (CZK 700 / EUR 30) and the recognition fee (CZK 750 / EUR 32) are two separate payments. Both are required before your documents can be assessed.
Documents and recognition of prior education: My bachelor’s degree is not in civil engineering. Can I apply for the master’s programme?
The master’s programme is intended for graduates of civil engineering or a closely related field. Other backgrounds are considered case by case during document screening, and the admission interview tests your knowledge of civil engineering fundamentals. There are no bridging courses: if you are admitted, you should be confident in structural mechanics, strength of materials, reinforced concrete design and building design, otherwise your studies will be very demanding.
Interview and decision: Is there an entrance exam?
There is no written exam. Applicants who pass the document screening are invited to a 15-minute online interview in English via Microsoft Teams.
Interview and decision: How long does it take to get the decision?
The decision is issued within 30 days after all conditions have been met, including the interview. Uploading complete and properly legalised documents is the best way to speed the process up.
Interview and decision: I need the decision on paper for my visa. How do I get it?
The embassy always requires the paper original of the decision. To book your embassy appointment a scanned copy is sometimes enough (check this with your embassy), but when you attend the appointment you must have the originals with you.
Tuition, fees and scholarships: Are there scholarships for international students?
There are no scholarships or tuition discounts at admission. After you enrol, two forms of support are available to all students: an accommodation allowance of around EUR 200 per year, and a merit scholarship of up to CZK 3,000 per month, which you can earn from the second year based on your study results.
Tuition, fees and scholarships: Can I study for free?
No. Tuition fees apply to all English-taught programmes and cannot be waived or reduced.
Visa and arrival: How does the visa procedure work and can the university help?
You apply for a long-term student visa at the Czech embassy in your country. The first step is to get an appointment at the embassy. Appointment slots are usually released once a month and can be hard to get, so start as soon as you receive the decision. After the appointment, the decision on your visa should come within about 3 months. The university cannot book embassy appointments, speed up the process or influence the outcome, so contact the embassy directly for the status of your application. Every year some students miss enrolment because of delays, so do not wait.
Visa and arrival: Does the university offer accommodation?
Yes. BUT halls of residence are available to all international students; you apply online after receiving the decision. A payment in advance secures your place; if your visa is refused, contact the accommodation office about a refund. See Halls of Residence and Dining Services.
Visa and arrival: Do I need health insurance?
Yes. Health insurance is required for the visa and for your stay in the Czech Republic. The embassy will tell you exactly what type of insurance you need, so please follow the instructions on the embassy’s website and in its documents.
