The subject develops the students’ knowledge about the European Union. It focuses on the deepening of their knowledge of the regional and structural policies of the EU, the structural funds of the EU, the regional division of the EU and its hierarchy (NUTS regions). Attention is also paid to the priority aims of structural policies and so-called community initiatives. Another subject of interest is the problematics of euroregions (the INTERREG programme).

Entry Knowledge

General knowledge within the scope of the bachelor’s level of architectural studies.

Aims

The aim of the subject is to deepen students’ knowledge of regional policies in the EU and of the system of nomenclature of units for territorial statistics (NUTS). Regional policies of the EU will be introduced in a complex way – starting from the legislative provisions and tools for the enforcement of this policy within a territory, up to a selection of successful projects. Special attention will also be paid to the hierarchical structure of NUTS and local administrative units (LAU).
Deepening of students’ knowledge of the regional policy of the EU and the system of nomenclature of units for territorial statistics (NUTS), starting with the legislative support and the tools for the enforcement of this policy in the region, including selected successful projects.

  • 1. Principles of the structural and regional policy of the EU – development.
  • 2. Structural funds and other funds and institutions financing structural and regional policies – European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), European Social Fund (ESF), European Agricultural Guarantee Fund (EAGR), European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance (FIFG); Cohesion Fund, European Investment Bank.
  • 3. Legislative support of structural and regional policies – basic documents in the field of primary and secondary legislation; Committee of the regions.
  • 4. – 5. Priorities of the structural and regional policy of the EU – aims of the structural policy in the individual programming periods, regions which are receiving help from structural funds, description of chosen projects.
  • 6. The initiatives of the European Community – initiatives of the European Community with a focus on initiatives with a regional dimension.
  • 7. Cross-border cooperation in the EU – euroregions, programmes supporting the development of euroregions (INTERREG), description of selected projects.
  • 8. – 9. The Czech Republic and cross-border cooperation – euroregions in the Czech Republic, development (PHARE-CBC programmes) and the current state, problems of cooperation and future prospects, description of selected projects with a focus on successful projects.
  • 13. Regional division of the EU - NUTS units of hierarchical levels 1 and 2 according to the individual countries of the EU, their basic demographic and economic characteristics.
