Entry Knowledge

B1 level in English according to CEFR.
Basic knowledge of professional Czech terminology in the fields of building renovations, building physics and technical systems.

Aims

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the contemporary professional English terminology in the fields of building services, building physics and energy sources. Students will be introduced to implementation of foreign terminology and methods in Czech conditions.
Students will be able to apply their knowledge in short professional texts and presentations in English.

13 weeks, 2 hours/week, compulsory

Syllabus

  • 1. Recapitulation of previous knowledge: English terminology related to the architectural and structural design of (residential) buildings with nearly zero energy consumption. Introduction of course requirements and deliverables.
  • 2. Building physics: Introduction to fundamental English terminology in indoor climate assessment, thermal protection of buildings, daylighting and acoustics.
  • 3. Building energy concepts. Introduction to fundamental terminology encountered in both European and Czech standards and laws. European requirements on Energy performance of buildings (EPBD). Optimization of energy consumption during the life cycle of a building.
  • 4. Renewable and alternative energy sources. Introduction of available energy sources and their applications in buildings. Assignment of spoken presentations describing concept of building services in students' bachelor projects. Assignment of  abstracts describing students' bachelor projects.
  • 5. Building services: Water supply and sewage. Introduction to fundamental English terminology in the field.
  • 6. Building services: Heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC).  Introduction to fundamental English terminology in the field.
  • 7. Building services: Electric wiring. Introduction to fundamental English terminology in the field.
  • 8. - 9. Presentations of students' bachelor projects (design of building services) and discussion.
  • 10. Smart buildings, cities and regions. Introduction of contemporary "smart" concepts and their application in construction industry. Feedback on abstracts and presentations and discussion on common mistakes.
  • 11. Classification and credits. Final submission of abstracts and presentations.
