The subject comprises six tutorials. Students read English scientific literature connected with their research. It can be a book, its part or a set of papers. The text should be 120-150 pages long. Students chose texts whose topic is useful for their research. The tutor approves of the texts. Students hand in 10-20 key terms with their translation and its source. Student also hand in a written summary of the text(s). It should be approx. one page long.

Learning outcomes

Students will learn to read a technical text in English. Students will learn to write a summary in English. Students will learn English terminology connected with the field of their research. Students will learn to find the English translation of technical terminology using reliable sources. Students will be able to conduct a professional dialogue in English about their research.

Prerequisites

Students must have a command of general English higher than the level of CEFR, and they must have completed the DY02 course.

Corequisites

Students can learn how to write academic papers in BYA11 (VYA002) Academic writing. They can learn technical English in the BYA9 (VYA012) and BYA10 (VYA001) courses.

Planned educational activities and teaching methods

Reading the approved text(s), consulting language problems, writing a list of key terms and their translations, and writing a summary. Detailed instructions can be found in LMS Moodle and the completed tasks are handed in there, too.
Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Forms and criteria of assessment

Students will make a list of 10-20 key expressions with their translation and its source. They will also write a summary of the studied text. It should be approx. one A4 page long.
