The construction industry is currently facing a fundamental paradigm shift.Efficiency of building operation was priority in the past. However, current interest is turning to embodied emissions and energies stored directly in building materials. The aim of this course is to familiarize students with this issue through the LCA (Life-Cycle Assessment) methodology.

Students will learn to interpret Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which are becoming an essential technical standard for the modern B2B market, green financing and public procurement. They will also become familiar with tools for multi-criteria assessment of building, in particular the national SBToolCZ methodology and the European Level(s) framework. The aim is to equip graduates with the ability to optimize material flows so that their projects meet the strict criteria of the “do no significant harm” (DNSH) principle. The graduates of the course will not be mere theorists, but experts capable of practically implementing sustainable strategies throughout the entire life cycle of a construction project.

Syllabus

1. Introduction to sustainability in construction - the role of LCA.

2. Standardized framework: LCA of products/buildings according to ČSN EN 15804 and 15978.

3. Production stage (modules A1 - A3) of products.

4. Construction stage (modules A4 - A5) of buildings.

5. Use stage (modules B1 - B7) of buildings.

6. End-of-life stage (modules C1-C4) and additional information beyond the life cycle (module D).

7. Evaluation and interpretation of LCA of products and buildings: applications, software and databases.

8. - 9. Multi-criteria assessment (buildings): Introduction to certification systems, DNSH principles, European taxonomy and current developments.

10. European framework Level(s): Methodology for assessing sustainable construction within the EU.

11. - 12. SBToolCZ: National methodology for assessing the quality of buildings.

13. Final summary and presentation of semester projects
