Entry Knowledge

Basics of Computer Science within the scope of secondary school.

Aims

Basics theoretical knowledges of computer science necessary for the whole study of civil engineering. Mastering of spreadsheets for engineering calculus.
Knowledge of the use of spreadsheets for data processing, engineering calculations and general problems of civil engineering.

13 weeks, 4 hours/week, compulsory

Syllabus

  • 1. Computer lab use policy, FCE computer network, computer network security, faculty information system.
  • 2. Rudiments of spreadsheets: cell addressing, entering names, copying, formatting, built-in Excel functions, formulas.
  • 3. Conditional formatting, data validation, data import (measurement data import).
  • 4. Graphic output.
  • 5. Advanced computations in engineering science using spreadsheets.
  • 6. Database applications (sorting, pivot tables, filtering).
  • 7. Analytical tools: goal seek, solver.
  • 8.–9. Basics of computer typography: text processing, document structure, styles, headings, references, footnotes, content, etc.
  • 10. Typesetting of technical documents. Formulas, tables, pictures, etc.
  • 11.–12. Basics of computer graphics: Image/photo processing using text processor and raster editor, image parameters for typesetting.
  • 13. Final test, final work (document) evaluation.
