Diagnostics of Buildings Constructions (K)

The task of construction diagnostics by carrying out a building-technical survey within maintenance, repair and reconstruction of structures.
General methodology of diagnostic procedures, flow diagram of structure survey.
Application of destructive and non-destructive testing methods by surveys, non-destructive tests made more accurate, evaluation of results with statistic methods.
Use the full range of non-destructive testing on real or virtual construction (check reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, a combination of GPR and electromagnetic methods for locating the reinforcement in structures).
Defect and failure diagnostics.
Deformations and cracks in constructions monitoring, and degradation of material.
Methods of long-time structure controlling.
Seminary paper concerns the proposal of detailed progress of structure-technical survey of the construction.
Laboratory practice with individual task, demonstration of test procedures on models.

Syllabus

  • 1. Assessment of existing structures.
  • 2. Overview of modern diagnostic methods.
  • 3. Evaluation of properties of concrete in structures.
  • 4.–5. Non-destructive and destructive methods of testing concrete in structures.
  • 6.–7. Methods for location of the reinforcement - electromagnetic, radiation, GPR.
  • 8.–9. Diagnostics of brick masonry and stone structures, monitoring of cracks.
  • 10.–11. Diagnostics of wooden and steel structures.
  • 12. Excursion – demonstration of diagnostics.

Exercise

13 weeks, 1 hours/week, compulsory

Syllabus

  • 1.–2. Task of seminary paper, draft of diagnostic of reinforced concrete structures.
  • 3.–4. Non-destructive testing of concrete – homogenity, indicators of reinforcement.
  • 5.–6. Testing of cores, the characteristic compressive strength of concrete.
  • 7.–8. Rebar locators - GPR, electromagnetic indicator, radiation methods
  • 9.–10. Testing of brick masonry.
  • 11.–12. Presentation of seminar papers, credit.
