Entry Knowledge

A knowledge of the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, basic vocabulary, and grammar is assumed, particularly numbers, conjugation of basic verbs, personal and possessive pronouns, the construction у меня есть, and nouns following the numbers 2, 3, and 4.

Students are also expected to be familiar with the following topics: introducing yourself; greetings; forms of address; countries, nationalities, and languages; birthdays; and family.

Aims

The aim of the course is to provide students with a foundation in Russian, including the written and spoken Cyrillic alphabet, basic vocabulary, and grammar. The course also develops the skills required to read, translate, and produce simple texts in Russian.

  2. Lesson 1: Leisure time – films, music, musical instruments; first conjugation
  3. Lesson 2: Leisure time – sport; second conjugation; the reflexive verbs заниматься and кататься
  4. Lesson 3: Expressing time; parts of the day
  5. Lesson 4: Daily routine – describing everyday activities; verbs in the first and second person singular
  6. Lesson 5: Occupations – names of professions; the instrumental case with the verb работать
  7. Lesson 6: Occupations – workplaces; choosing a career; constructions with the verbs интересовать and нравиться
  8. Lesson 7: Education – types of schools; the verbs заниматься, учить, and учиться
  9. Lesson 8: Classes; dates; the past tense
  10. Lesson 9: University studies; declension of singular nouns
  11. Lesson 10: Holidays and vacations – describing activities; names of countries in the nominative and locative cases
