Entry Knowledge

Basics of Computer Science within the scope of secondary school.

Aims

  • The purpose of the course is a basic level of knowledge and skills for the effective use of computer technology. In addition to the overview of the general technical solutions in the field, students absolved the course are ready to use advanced software for engineering calculations.
  • Students will acquire basic knowledge of computer networks and network security. They obtain an overview of the main tasks of operating systems and applications software.
  • In addition, students will learn about the principles of computer graphics, image processing and the basic rules of computer typography.

Syllabus

  1. Computer lab use policy, FCE computer network, computer network security, faculty information system.
  2. Rudiments of spreadsheets: cell addressing, entering names, copying, formatting, built-in Excel functions, formulas.
  3. Conditional formatting, data validation, data import (measurement data import).
  4. Graphic output.
  5. Advanced computations in engineering science using spreadsheets.
  6. Database applications (sorting, pivot tables, filtering).
  7. Analytical tools: goal seek, solver.
  8. Basics of computer typography: text processing
  9. Document structure, styles, headings, references, footnotes, content, …
  10. Typesetting of technical documents. Formulas, tables, pictures, …
  11. Basics of computer graphics: Image/photo processing using text processor and raster editor
  12. Image parameters for typesetting.
  13. Final test, final work (document) evaluation.

Prerequisites

Basics of Computer Science within the scope of secondary school.

Specification of controlled instruction, the form of instruction, and the form of compensation of the absences
