National Centre of Competence CAMEB project provides new opportunities for the development of sustainable construction
Linking industry and research to innovate and positively drive developments in the construction industry towards material and energy efficiency are the main tasks of the CAMEB National Centre of Competence. The results of the project support a more efficient and environmentally friendly use of resources in construction in various ways: by saving energy, by developing new construction mixtures with the substitution of existing materials by recycled or renewable materials or by simulation and digitalisation.
The issue of sustainability and the considerate use of natural resources for materials in construction is one of the key issues of the circular economy. The project has contributed substantially to addressing this issue and achieved cutting-edge results. The research institutions and companies involved are contributing to the development of knowledge, new methods and practices for sustainable construction. The project has also succeeded in setting up a long-term quality system of cooperation between the research environment and industry, also in an international context. Almost 30 companies participated in the project and are actively using the new knowledge in practice.
During the four years of the project, scientists and students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Brno University of Technology have been working on a variety of research topics. One of them is the possibility of recycling water and waste from wastewater treatment plants with testing in laboratories, experiments and on a pilot site in the city of Třešt', which is also a partner of the project. Others were composite structural elements that can break thermal bridges and improve the energy balance of a building, or the use of thermal energy and ground cooling. The researchers also looked at secondary raw materials and their application in construction, for example as part of mixtures for earth and other structures. The digitalisation and development of building information models, the use of virtual reality in the design and operation of buildings and their practical application are also a large area of the CAMEB project.
During the final presentation, the evaluation committee rated the scientific and research work of all the participants involved as excellent. The results of the project have a great and long-term application potential, especially their sustainability and contribution to society.
