Pioneer female civil engineers and today's followers

The content is archived. Information may be outdated or misleading.

In the early years of our school, women were not even allowed to enter the classroom. This academic year, we boast a 40% representation of female students.

The first regular female students could enroll only in the time of changes after World War I, from the academic year 1918/19. In 1924, Anežka Václavíková-Zichová from Drásov and Štepánka Utíkalová from Brno passed the state exam. Both of them studied first as exceptional students, later they had access to education formally unrestricted. During the First Republic, until the closure of Czech universities by the post-Tectorate authorities, a total of 11 women completed their studies in construction.

The work done by the pioneers of women's education in the early days of our school was not in vain. One hundred years later, almost 40% of women are studying at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, which is an exceptional figure in the field of engineering. In the Czech Republic, technical colleges have an average of 28% female students. Yet in construction practice, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, men outnumber women by up to ten times.

The comparison concerning the representation of women among the faculty staff is also positive. In this academic year, the figure is 36%; in the early days of the university, female teachers were not even considered.
