Study aims

The consecutive master’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography with a standard duration of 2 years is designed to meet the requirements of the Higher Education Act (Act No. 111/1998 Coll.); it has been created in accordance with the National Programme for the Development of Education in the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic; and with standards formulated within European documents currently in force, for example in Act No. 2005/36/ES, paragraph 8, article 46, on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications. The study programme is designed for the graduates of bachelor’s study programmes from technically- oriented universities and tertiary education institutions, and primarily for graduates from the three-year bachelor’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography offered at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT in Brno. The programme is also designed for graduates from three-year technically-oriented bachelor’s study programmes from the states of the EU, enabling student mobility; students may choose to take part of their degree at a different institution, choosing between similar accredited master’s study programmes offered by faculties of civil engineering in the Czech Republic and in other EU states. The master’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography is taught in one field of study, Geodesy and Cartography. The study programme is purposefully aimed at a wide range of main activities which graduates may encounter in their surveying career. Students extend the theoretical knowledge gained from the bachelor’s study programme with further theoretical knowledge from mathematics, geophysics and geodynamics, theoretical geodesy, geodetic astronomy and cosmic geodesy, and other professionally oriented subjects. The information provided in this basic foundation is then developed through two main thematic groups of specialised subjects. The first group comprises subjects from the area of engineering geodesy including, apart from engineering geodesy, primarily civil engineering geodesy and industrial geodesy, and the surveying of underground spaces. These subjects are necessarily accompanied by a group of encyclopaedic subjects from the areas of geotechnics, transportation structures and water structures. Further subjects extending the field are metrology and a course on legislation. The second group comprises subjects from the fields of cartography, property registry and geo-informatics. These subjects are further extended in the fields of informatics, databases, mathematical cartography, etc. Economics subjects are common to both groups. The Final State Exam is composed of two parts: the defence of the student’s master’s thesis and a specialized discussion on the subjects of the study programme. The aim of the master’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography is that graduates from the programme: can find full employment of their skills in their field of study; are able to creatively apply the knowledge obtained during the programme; can compete with graduates from similar study programmes from educational institutions not only in the Czech Republic but also within the countries of the EU; command the necessary language skills; have gained the necessary theoretical, specialised and practical knowledge and skills in the area of geodesy and cartography, these being grounded in the current state of scientific knowledge, research and development, and manage to apply them and develop their capability for independent creative activity.

Specific admission requirements

Candidates applying to study in the consecutive master’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography must demonstrate knowledge and understanding within the scope specified by the appropriate directive of the Dean of FCE BUT in the following ways: through successful completion of the bachelor’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography at FCE BUT, or at another university (in which case the programme must provide an adequate basis for the pursuit of further studies via the consecutive master’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography); or through successful completion of another bachelor’s study programme and the demonstration of sufficient knowledge from the core specialized subjects required for study in the consecutive master’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography; or via passing an entrance exam in natural science subjects, general foundation subjects and core specialised subjects within the scope of knowledge required from graduates of the three-year bachelor’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography at FCE BUT or other civil engineering faculties in the Czech Republic or abroad.

Key learning outcomes

Graduates from the consecutive master’s study programme have gained highly specialized (theoretical and specialized) knowledge in their field of study. They are able to apply the gained knowledge from the field of geodesy and cartography when solving problems within the field of Geodesy and Cartography. They are capable, within the scope of the skills they have gained, of independently solving even demanding specialised problems and are thus prepared for a career as an engineer in industry. As highly-qualified specialists they are able to hold high engineering and managerial posts and successfully perform the functions required of them. They are able to work in state administration (at Land Registry Offices and State Land Offices), where they may carry out all kinds of activities, including management (collecting the outputs of land surveying activities, settling disputes, check measurements, organising work on the making of digital cadastral maps, management of cadastre redevelopment via new mapping, negotiation with municipalities, with property owners and other authorized entities, etc.). Graduates are competent to participate in surveying activities during special construction work such as the demarcation of tunnels, mining works, large bridges and special structures. They can design and guarantee demarcation procedures and check measurements. They can participate in obtaining source data for geological, geotechnical and geophysical surveys. They can apply the most precise satellite-based methods, methods of remote sensing and aerial scanning to create new maps, including 3D outputs. They are capable of collaborating in the creation of modern map products including Internet map services. They are also able to take responsibility for the professional management of individuals and groups.

Access to further education

Graduates may continue their education further through a doctoral study programme, where they may gain the title Ph.D. With regard to graduates’ knowledge of foreign languages in their specialised area they can study for a doctorate either in the Czech Republic or abroad.
