Obtaining, studying and elaborating current knowledge of the problematics of selected theme of the specialization of study programme Structural and Transport Engineering, supported by the supervisor and supervisors - specialists from other professional and scientific workplaces of the faculty (e.g. faculty research centre AdMaS), university, and extracurricular scientific and research workplaces. Defining simulation or experimental parts in the field of the theme of dissertation thesis. Publication and presentation of the outputs of the scientific, research and development activities - elaboration of the papers in conference proceedings and professional and scientific journals. Preparation of the semester plan of the participation in professional events (seminars, conferences, congresses) and study or professional stays at forign scientific and academic workplaces. Co-operation with the practice directly within the frame of the projects solution.
The student will acquire, master and gradually deepen and expand the knowledge from the problematic of the selected theme of the specialization of the study programme Structural and Transport Engineering, in connection with the dissertation topic. The student will learn the work with scientific and professional literature and other available sources of the knowledge and information in the area of solved dissertation topic and in related areas. The student will master the ability of the (re)search activities and critical analysis of the sources, their elaboration, evaluation and utilization in own research activity. The student will be in particular able to independently, creatively to approach to the solution of the tasks of scientific and research activity, from the search and utilization of relevant sources, through the choose of the conception and solution methods, to the elaboration and evaluation of the reached results, including their generalization. Thus, as a result the student will master the methods of the scientific work, theoretical ones (e.g. computer modelling, numerical analysis, etc.), as well as practical ones (e.g. experimental methods), in dependence on the character of the dissertation thesis and needs of the solution.
The particular direct output of studying this course (Doctoral Seminar 1) is obtaining and sorting information and knowledge from the literature and other sources and, on this base, acquiring the knowledge of state of the art in the area of the dissertation topic.
Knowledge at the level of a graduate student of the study programme Structural and Transport Engineering. Practice is an advantage.
Knowledge obtained in the courses of the profiling base, in connection with the dissertation topic. Knowledge of statistics, in particular elaboration and evaluation of data sets. Numerical methods, computer support, modelling.
Planned educational activities and teaching methods
The teaching is realized through the seminars, individual consultations of the student with the supervisor, eventually supervisors - specialists, with the accent to significant share of self-studying. An integral part of the teaching is the individual student work with the literature and other relevant sources, their researches and elaboration of obtained information and knowledge, in particular focused on the topic of the dissertation thesis.
Forms and criteria of assessment
Elaboration of the seminar work demonstrating searching of the literature and other relevant sources, collection and sorting of the information and knowledge of the state of the art in the area of the dissertation thesis topic.
During the doctoral seminar, doctoral candidate acquires further theoretical and professional knowledge under supervision based on selected areas of Constructions and Traffic Structures especially Z1: Mechanics of load bearing structures, Z2: Concrete and masonry structures, Z3: Steel, timber and composite structures, Z4: Geotechnics, Z5: Experimental engineering and building testing, Z6: Road structures, Z7: Railway structures and constructions, related to his/her dissertation. Thereby, the prerequisites for his/her independent theoretical and creative scientific training are formed, which serves as a base for his/her dissertation thesis processing.

Syllabus of practice
1. - 13. Searching and studying professional backgrounds and theoretical, practical and scientific sources in the field of solved theme. Defining the scientific benefit of the doctoral student in the given problematics, elaboration of the documents for submitting the project proposal (recommended in the co-operation with the doctoral student of the 2-nd study year solving the near or related topic of the dissertation).
