Rehabilitation of Water Infrastructure

Academic Year 2026/27

BPA010 course is part of 1 study plan

BPC-SI / V Summer Semester 4th year

The course focuses on the renewal of water infrastructure, particularly water supply and sewer networks. Attention is paid to methods for investigating and assessing the technical condition of infrastructure, identifying defects and failures, and planning renewal measures. The course also covers the principles of selecting an appropriate rehabilitation approach for water infrastructure, including repair, renovation and replacement, with regard to its technical condition, operational requirements and local constraints.

Particular attention is given to current trenchless technologies used for the renewal of water supply and sewer networks, including local repairs, renovation of pipelines along the existing alignment, trenchless pipe replacement and rehabilitation of related structures. Emphasis is placed on the technical and conceptual assessment of individual methods and their suitability for specific conditions.

Entry Knowledge

Basic knowledge of utility networks, water supply and sewerage.

Aims

Upon successful completion of the course, students will acquire the knowledge, skills and competences required to assess the technical condition of water infrastructure and to plan and design rehabilitation measures, particularly for water supply and sewer networks.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the course, students will:

  • know the basic principles of assessing the technical condition of water supply and sewer networks,

  • know the main types of defects and failures and the methods used for inspection, investigation and diagnostics of water infrastructure,

  • be familiar with pipe materials and materials used for repair, renovation and replacement,

  • know the principles of planning the rehabilitation and renewal of water infrastructure,

  • know the basic methods of repair, renovation and replacement of water supply and sewer networks,

  • know the principles and potential applications of the main trenchless technologies,

  • be familiar with relevant technical standards and legislation.

Skills

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • interpret the results of basic inspection, investigation and technical condition assessment methods,

  • identify the main types of defects and assess their significance for the further operation of the infrastructure,

  • select and professionally justify an appropriate method of pipe repair, renovation or replacement,

  • assess the suitability of a selected trenchless technology with regard to technical condition, operational requirements and local constraints,

  • compare basic rehabilitation alternatives and assess their technical suitability,

  • prepare a basic rehabilitation plan and a technical proposal for the rehabilitation of a selected section of a water supply or sewer network,

  • work with relevant technical documentation, standards and professional sources.

Competences

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • independently assess basic problems related to the technical condition and rehabilitation of water infrastructure,

  • integrate information on technical condition, operational requirements and available technologies when selecting a rehabilitation approach,

  • propose and professionally justify an appropriate rehabilitation solution and compare it with alternative approaches,

  • apply acquired knowledge and skills when planning and technically designing the rehabilitation of water supply and sewer networks,

  • communicate professionally about water infrastructure rehabilitation using appropriate technical terminology.
