Faculty of Civil Engineering at Brno University of Technology celebrates 125 years

The content is archived. Information may be outdated or misleading.

Civil engineering has been taught at the first Czech technical college in Brno since November 1899. It started with four teachers (mathematics, descriptive geometry, mineralogy and drawing by hand) and 47 students. By the establishment of the independent Czechoslovak Republic, mechanical and electrical engineering, chemistry, architecture were gradually added, and the first female students were officially allowed to enrol.

Our faculty celebrated the anniversary, to which the entire Brno University of Technology subscribes, with a festive public meeting of the academic community and staff with the participation of the Rector Ladislav Janicek, partners of the faculty, deans of friendly civil engineering faculties, members of the Faculty Scientific and Industrial Council and other distinguished guests. At the same time, the anniversary is a great opportunity to appreciate students and personalities who contribute to the development of the faculty.

Dean of the Faculty Rostislav Drochytka awarded three students with Signum Prosperitatis medals for outstanding achievements:

Veronika Chrástová is involved in the scientific research activities of the Institute of Water Structures, she has won several awards for her bachelor thesis and she was ranked third in the competition 8 of BUT.

Petra Laciková is a PhD student and a researcher of three BUT grant projects.

Adam Kuhajdik focuses mainly on underground engineering and, in addition to his excellent academic results, he has collected several awards for his diploma thesis.

The gold, silver and bronze Signum Excellentiae medals, which were presented by the Dean to distinguished personalities, were discussed in advance at a meeting of the Faculty's Scientific Council, in accordance with the Faculty's Statute.

Special commemorative medals printed from composite concrete on a 3D printer were awarded by the Dean to colleagues from the management of civil engineering faculties, secondary schools and companies that are members of the FAST BUT partnership programme.

The Faculty's anniversary was also an occasion to award medals of the Professor Stefan Kassai Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Education. Through it, Professor Kassay honours personalities for their significant contribution in business, and for linking science and practice. For their scientific and pedagogical work, the awards were given to the Dean of FAST BUT Rostislav Drochytka, Rudolf Hela and Jan Mareček.

After the academic assembly, the celebrations continued with a joint lunch and a theatre performance at the Bolek Polívka Theatre.
