Study aims

The aim of the bachelor’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography with a standard duration of 3 years is, in accordance with the Higher Education Act (Act No. 111/1998), to provide theoretical, specialised and practical knowledge and skills in the field of the geodetic and cartographic sciences as well as the related sciences which will enable graduates to continue in the consecutive master’s study programme for this field of study, or immediately apply the knowledge gained in their bachelor’s studies in land surveying and cadastral practice. The bachelor’s study programme is purposefully aimed at the preparation of students for professional practice, as well as at the creation of a basis for further studies in the consecutive master’s study programme. In the first four semesters students gain the necessary knowledge from subjects providing the theoretical background of the field and the specialised geodetic background, and also law, economics, information technology and subjects providing a general professional background. This foundation is further developed in specialized subjects providing information about geodetic and cartographic methods and technologies. Theoretical knowledge gained in specialized subjects is applied in practice in order to master modern surveying and processing techniques. Such subjects involve the active usage of computer technology, and not only in the classrooms, but also during practical training in the field. Every year of the study programme includes several weeks of field instruction. Graduates obtain knowledge that will enable them to work in the field of property registry, with all types of mapping and on basic tasks in the area of engineering surveying. Thanks to the incorporation of geoinformatics in the programme, graduates will be able to make a career in interdisciplinary areas where maps and data products are used (agriculture, forestry, the environment, the construction industry, state administration and local authorities, etc.).

Specific admission requirements

Candidates applying to study in the bachelor’s study programme Geodesy and Cartography must demonstrate knowledge and understanding within the scope specified by the appropriate directive of the Dean of FCE BUT. It requires them to have successfully completed their secondary education with a “Maturita” final secondary school exam. Then, either the grade point average from the candidate’s secondary school allows acceptance without an entrance exam, or an entrance exam is sat featuring mathematics and physics papers based on the current syllabus taught at grammar schools.

Key learning outcomes

Graduates are able to work with the majority of geodatabases to produce required outputs. They are able to independently create maps for various purposes, ranging from direct land surveying in the field, to data processing, the creation of digital maps and other outputs, including visualization applications. Graduates are capable of processing source data collected by the most modern surveying methods (satelite measurements, land and aerial photogrammetry, land and aerial scanning, etc.). The main aim of the course is to develop theoretically and practically educated professionals ready for the majority of contemporary geodetic and cartographic tasks in industry. Graduates should also be able to continue their studies, specialising further, in a consecutive master’s study programme.

Access to further education

Graduates may continue their education in a consecutive master’s programme and gain the title “Ing.“. With regard to graduates’ knowledge of foreign languages in their specialized area, they can study for their master’s degree either in the Czech Republic or abroad.
