The content of the consecutive master’s study programme in Civil Engineering with a standard duration of 1.5 years is designed to meet the requirements of the Higher Education Act (Act No. 111/1998 Coll.) and Act No. 360/1992 Coll. on the Professional Practice of Certified Architects and on the Professional Practice of Chartered Engineers and Technicians Engaged in Construction. It has been created in accordance with the National Programme for the Development of Education in the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, and with standards formulated within European documents currently in force, e.g. European Directive 2005/36/EC, Section 8, Article 46 on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications. The study programme is intended for graduates from bachelor’s study programmes from technically- oriented universities and tertiary education institutions and primarily for graduates from the four-year bachelor’s study programme Civil Engineering offered at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT. The programme is also designed for graduates from four-year technically-oriented bachelor’s study programmes from the states of the EU, enabling student mobility; students may choose to take part of their degree at a different institution, choosing between similar accredited master’s study programmes offered by faculties of civil engineering in the Czech Republic and in other EU states. The fields of study into which the study programme is divided draw on and continue many years of tradition in the offering and teaching of such disciplines at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT, while their syllabuses are designed to meet current demand and the needs of industry. The study programme has syllabuses for six fields of study: Building Constructions, Structures and Traffic Constructions, Water Management and Water Structures, Civil Engineering Management, Building Material Engineering and Construction Technology. The Final State Exam consists of two parts: the defence of the student’s master’s thesis and a specialised discussion on the subjects of the study programme. The aim of the consecutive master’s study programme Civil Engineering is for graduates of the programme to be able to: find employment in their field of study; develop the knowledge gained during their studies in a creative manner; successfully compete with other graduates of similar educational institutions not only in the Czech Republic but also in the states of the EU; be authorised according to Act No. 360/1992 as a certified engineer; employ the necessary language skills; continue in their studies via a doctoral study programme; gain necessary theoretical, specialised and practical knowledge and skills from the area of civil engineering that are based on the current state of scientific knowledge, research and development, and manage to apply them and develop their capability for independent creative activity.

Candidates applying to study in their chosen field in the consecutive master’s study programme must demonstrate knowledge and understanding within the scope specified by the appropriate directive of the Dean of FCE BUT in the following ways: through successful completion of a four-year Civil Engineering bachelor’s study programme at FCE BUT or at another university (in which case the programme must provide an adequate basis for the pursuit of further studies in the chosen field of study of the consecutive master’s study programme Civil Engineering); or through completion of any bachelor’s study programme and the demonstration of sufficient knowledge from the key specialised subjects of the given field chosen by the student wishing to study in the consecutive master’s study programme Civil Engineering; or via passing an entrance exam in natural science subjects (mathematics, physics) and general foundation subjects from the construction field as well as key specialised subjects within the scope of knowledge required from graduates of the four-year bachelor’s programme Civil Engineering at FCE BUT or at other civil engineering faculties in the Czech Republic or abroad.

Graduates from the consecutive master’s study programme Civil Engineering have gained highly specialised (theoretical and professional) knowledge within their studied field. They are capable of applying this knowledge in the solution of problems within the given field of study. They are entitled to use the title "inženýr" (abbreviated to Ing.) before their name. They are capable, within the scope of the skills they have gained, of independently solving even demanding specialised problems and are thus prepared for work as an engineer in industry. As a highly-qualified specialist they are able to hold high engineering and managerial posts and successfully perform the functions required of them, and are equipped with the prerequisites for the solution of even complex technical problems, and not only during the comprehensive design of structures, but also during the preparation and realization of such structures. Within the scope of their competence (after gaining the required amount of work experience), graduates from the consecutive master’s study programme Civil Engineering can gain certification. They are capable of managing complex technical or specialised activities or projects and take responsibility for their quality. They are also able to take responsibility for the professional management of individuals and groups.

Graduates may continue their education further through a doctoral study programme, where they may gain the title Ph.D. With regard to graduates’ knowledge of foreign languages in their specialised area they can study for a doctorate either in the Czech Republic or abroad.
