Study aims

The content of the consecutive master’s study programme Architecture and Settlement Development with a two-year standard duration of study is designed to meet the requirements of the Higher Education Act (Act No. 111/1998 Coll.) and Act No. 360/1992 on the Professional Practice of Certified Architects and on the Professional Practice of Chartered Engineers and Technicians Engaged in Construction. It has been created in accordance with the National Programme for the Development of Education in the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, and with standards formulated within European documents currently in force, e.g. European Directive 2005/36/EC, Section 8, Article 46 on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications. The study programme is designed for graduates from bachelor’s study programmes from architecturally-oriented universities and non-university institutions of higher education, and primarily for graduates from the four-year bachelor’s study programme Architecture of Building Construction offered at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT. The programme is also offered to graduates from four-year architecturally-oriented bachelor’s study programmes from the states of the EU, enabling student mobility; students may choose to take part of their degree at a different institution, choosing between similar accredited master’s study programmes offered by faculties of architecture or faculties of civil engineering in the Czech Republic and in other EU states. The structure of the study programme draws on and continues many years of tradition at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at BUT in the offering and teaching of fields of study whose syllabuses are designed to meet current demand and the needs of industry. The study programme Architecture and Settlement Development is single-discipline with the option of narrower specialisation according to the interests of candidates. The following areas are offered: Architecture; Architecture Management; Architecture Planning. The course is completed by a master’s thesis. The main tuition method is via design studio work which amounts to 33% of total tuition in a typical semester. The fourth semester is reserved purely for design studio work. An important part of the study programme is a professional work placement on the premises of future employers as a reaction to the demands of the profession and the evaluation of Czech tertiary education by OECD experts. The work placement is undergone, reported on and assessed according to special rules. Graduates with a bachelor’s degree in architecture can be excused from the work placement if they have worked full time for at least two years in a certified architectural design office. The Final State Exam consists of two parts: the defence of the student’s master’s thesis and a specialised discussion on the subjects of the study programme. The aim of the consecutive master’s study programme Architecture and Settlement Development is for graduates of the programme to be able to: find employment in the field they have studied; develop the knowledge gained during their studies in a creative manner; successfully compete with other graduates of similar educational institutions not only in the Czech Republic but also in the states of the EU; be authorised according to Act No. 360/1992 as a certified architect; employ the necessary language skills; gain necessary theoretical, specialised and practical knowledge and skills from the area of architecture that are based on the current state of scientific knowledge, research and development, and manage to apply them and develop their capability for independent creative activity.

Specific admission requirements

Candidates applying to study in the consecutive master’s study programme Architecture and Settlement Development must demonstrate knowledge and understanding within the scope and under the conditions specified by the appropriate directive of the Dean of FCE BUT in the following manner: through completion of the four-year bachelor’s study programme Architecture of Building Construction at FCE BUT, or a similar programme at another university that is an adequate basis for the pursuit of further studies in the master’s study programme Architecture of Building Construction. A programme considered to be adequate is one containing at least 3 semesters of creative design studio work, demonstrated by a portfolio of design studio work from the previous course; in borderline cases a written test may be taken on a unified theme. ‘Borderline cases’ are understood to be those involving bachelor’s course results that are under-average according to ECTS rules or the inadequate composition or unconfirmable content of subjects taken during the previous course with regard to the sense of the European Directive 2005/36/EC, Section 8, Article 46.
