Syllabus

1. Introduction to the study of the course. Experimental verification of members and components of metal and timber structures – possibilities of experiments realization, types of the tests, test results. 2.-3. Statistical elaboration of experimental data obtained from the loading tests. 4.-5. Probabilistic evaluation of test results – design assisted by testing. 6. Terminology, classification, requirements, characteristic of temporary bridge structures. 7. Basic systems of steel temporary bridges – web-plated and truss temporary bridges. 8. Mobile steel bridges. Temporary timber bridge structures. 9.-12. Selected topics of the design of advanced timber structures – spatial timber structures, timber structures combined of various materials, connections of modern timber structures. 13. Failures and reconstructions of metal and timber structures and bridges.

Exercise

13 weeks, 2 hours/week, compulsory

Syllabus

1. Examples of experimental verification of steel, composite steel-concrete and timber structural members and components – presentation of loading tests, examples of experimental data obtained from the tests, character and types of test results. 2.–3. Statistical elaboration of experimental data obtained from the loading tests: training using the sets of material tests results – determination of physical mechanical properties of steel, concrete, glass-fibre-concrete, structural glass. 4.–6. Probabilistic evaluation of test results: training using the sets of loading tests results – determination of the design resistance of steel and steel-concrete columns, thin-walled steel beams, timber beams strengthened by external bonded FRP reinforcement. 7.–8. Temporary bridges: examples of the design of modern temporary structures – presentation of the results of static and structural design of steel temporary footbridge. 9.–12. Selected topics of the design of advanced timber structures: examples of the design of selected members and connections of timber structures. 13. Calculation of the load-ability of steel railway bridge.
