History of the Field

History of the field started in 1960 when Faculty of Architecture and Building Construction merged Faculty of Construction Engineering to form Faculty of Civil Engineering. In this faculty a Department of Economy was founded, the head of which professor Miloslav Tejc became afterwards. The scope of teaching and scientific research was the department economy as seen in that time, important was mainly the definition of economic branches as a part of civil engineering education.

In 1969 this department merged the department of construction production so that the new Department of Economy and Building Production Organization originated. As a head of this department professor František Korvas was designated. He influenced significantly the scope of pedagogic and scientific research activities. But the original extent of economy education in the Faculty of Civil Engineering wasn’t changed. Economy was taught in contemporary educational fields A (architecture), S (building construction), V (water structures), KD (construction and transportation). Beside economic disciplines also some methods of management and organization of production in construction, admissible in those times, were developed. The accent was put especially on space-time display and modeling of construction activities. Later on, regarding the main scope of activity, the department changed name to Department of Economy and Technology of Buildings.

The problems of building production that kept to lag behind world trends forced government authorities to search for margins also in organization and management of building production on every level. That’s why a new independent study field Economy and Construction Management originated, the head of which doc. Ing. Jan Křižák was designated.

In 1989 and mainly in 1990 both scientific and pedagogic scope of department activities changed, the department was reorganized, expert sections originated, doc. Ing. Bohumil Puchýř, CSc. become a new head of the department. In 1991 the name of department changed to Institute of Contruction Economy and Management. The department quickly and congenitally revised study plans of its branch, new courses and outlines were prepared. The change of scientific and pedagogic scope was so fast that even took by surprise some students and teachers. By 1995 90% of department staff changed. In 1996 the Department of Construction Management and Economy, as well as other branches of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, enrolled the registry of European Federation of National Engineering Associations FEANI.

From 1996 to 2002 the branch of construction economy advanced intensively. New specializations originated, namely Civil Engineering Management in Construction - VYS, Economy and Management of Production in Construction Industry - PSV, and Civil Engineering Management in Public Administration – VES. The last mentioned specialization reflects the need of specialists for investment and construction departments in public administration on all levels. The education of alumni of VES specialization is since 2002 recognized as a required qualification for leading officers in public administration.

New study programmes - bachelor, magister and doctoral - were accredited in education field Civil Engineering Management in 2004. Education field Civil Engineering Management continues in field Construction Economy and Management.
